Since retiring from teaching mathematics at Thomas Hardye, I have continued my involvement with education by being a Governor at The Prince of Wales School in Dorchester, and through the Ashley Churchill Thorner Trust, which offers small grants to students in Higher or Further education. I am also a member of Dorchester Town Council and vice-chairman of its management committee.
I am Chairman of The Volunteer Centre Dorset which matches volunteers with the organisations that need them and Secretary of the Dorchester Community Plays Association, with whom I hope to be involved in the next play, due in autumn 2012. I enjoy walking with my wife Val, exploring this beautiful county from exciting coast to rolling hills and hidden vales. I referee football matches throughout the Dorset leagues and can also be found acting as a cricket umpire and occasional player for Abbotsbury.
I first became a councillor (in Abingdon, Oxfordshire) because I was asked - and because I am keen to contribute, and to help others contribute, to making our society as pleasant as it can be. Community is an important concept to me, whether this be a neighbourhood, a village, a larger town, a sports club, a music or drama society or simply a group who meet for mutual support, and I hope that people will feel able to be involved and share their enthusiasm in whatever way they see fit.
