Do I need planning permission?
It is often a good idea to submit your plans to your planning department for an informal comment before you proceed.
Whether or not you need to apply for planning permission will depend on a number of factors. This includes what you want to do and where, the constraints on and around your property and any work that may have been done previously. Consent can be required for any work, however minor it might seem, as planning legislation controls a broad range of undertaking - from minor household development (e.g. satellite dishes) to major developments (e.g. a power station).
Other approvals
Whether or not you need to apply for planning permission for your work, there are some other kinds of approval you may need. Most are given by the council, which will be able to let you have further information.
Certain other kinds of approval are required when proposed development would affect special environmental features or create potential dangers. In all cases the local planning department will be able to direct applicants to the department or organisation where the necessary applications should be made.
There is extensive guidance on planning permission (including an interactive display devoted to positioning satellite dishes) on the national Planning Portal website.
- Permitted development
You can make certain types of minor changes to properties without needing to apply for permission.
