Adoption process

Information about the route you will take to adopt a child.

  • Initial enquiry to the Adoption and Permanence team - detailed information pack provided
  • You will then be asked to complete and return a Register an Interest form
  • You will receive an invitation to an information evening
  • There will be a home visit by an Adoption and Permanence social worker
  • If you meet the criteria you will be able to make an adoption application
  • You will then be invited to attend a preparation course
  • Criminal Records Bureau checks and medicals and personal references will be taken up
  • Completion of the preparation course
  • Assessment interviews will be carried out
  • The assessment report will then be shared with you and presented to the adoption panel
  • The agency will then make a decision based on the panel's recommendation
  • If all goes well you will then be approved as prospective adopters and will await a suitable 'match' with a child or children to be placed with you
