Coastal economy
The Dorset Coast represents one of the county's principal economic assets.
The coastal zone supports, and provides the reason for many of Dorset's industries.
Tourism is Dorset's biggest industry, and the coast provides the focus for much of this activity. Many thousands visit the coast each year to enjoy the scenery, and participate in activities both on the coast and in the inshore waters.
There are three large ports (Poole, Weymouth and Portland) and five small harbours (Christchurch, Wareham, Swanage, West Bay and Lyme Regis) - all of which play an important part in Dorset's local economy.
