Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment - 2004

The Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment of Dorset's coastal archaeology.

Wessex Archaeology have completed a Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment of Dorset's archaeology, this was a desk top study which aimed to bring together all known archaeological information as a basis for future research. Funded by English Heritage, and supported by the Dorset Coast Forum and Dorset County Council , the project:

  • Provided an enhanced Sites and Monuments Record for Dorset's coast, and offshore waters;
  • Provided an overview of coastal change from the Late Upper Palaeolithic onwards;
  • Provided an assessment of the degree and nature of threat to coastal and historic assets based on current predictions of possible coastal change;
  • Provided a broad assessment of the likely archaeological potential and vulnerability of all stretches of the coast;
  • Provided a sound basis for developing management and research priorities in respect of specific sites and areas of potential;
  • Enhanced public understanding and enjoyment of the coastal zone.

This project was completed in 2004 and the information collected has now been incorporated into the Historic Environment Record.
