Hearing and Vision Support Service (HVSS)

Information for children who need support with hearing, vision and speech.

How does the service work?

  • HVSS has a team of Advisory Teachers who have specialist qualifications in hearing and vision
  • The specialist teachers can support children, young people, families, pre-schools and schools from the time when the hearing or vision impairment is identified
  • HVSS work with children and young people with a range of impairments from mild to profound
  • The team can help by giving advice, training or sometimes through direct teaching
  • Parents/carers are partners and HVSS always work in partnership with parents to agree the support and the involvement
  • HVSS work in close partnership with education, social care and health services to provide all-round support when it is needed

Where does the service work? 

  • HVSS can work in family homes, playgroups, nurseries, schools and colleges
  • This specialist service is provided across the three local authorities of Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole

What else does the service offer?

  • In addition to specialist teaching and advice, the service has keyboarding tutors, a mobility officer and a technician to help children and young people whose vision is impaired
  • For those who have impaired hearing, there are specially trained and experienced Teaching Assistants, a Sign Language Support Worker and an Educational Audiologist (whose role is to advice on hearing aids and technical equipment)

  • It is important that there are no barriers to the inclusion of children and young people with sensory impairment and the service will work to make sure that they have every opportunity to enjoy life in their local communities
  • The HVSS team raise awareness to ensure that the rights of children and young people with hearing or vision impairment are respected and that their needs are met
