Youth work training

The Early Intervention Service provides a number of training opportunities for all full-time, part-time paid and voluntary youth workers, plus information on becoming a youth worker.

How can I find out about training courses that the Early Intervention Service delivers for youth support workers and volunteers?

Posters publicising training events are sent to out to each youth centre in September and when courses become available. 

What courses are available?

Foundation Training

This training is a requirement for all newly appointed youth support workers and volunteers. It consists of the following courses;

Safeguarding Children and Young People
This is a day course and the content covers

  • How to provide a safe environment for young people
  • How to deal with situations of abuse
  • How to deal with disclosures and how to protect yourself when working with young people

An Introduction to Youth Work Practice
This course is delivered over an evening and a day and the content covers

  • The roles and responsibility of a youth worker
  • The different methods of youth work
  • How to plan a youth work activity and policies and procedures relevant to your role

Level 2 and 3 Youth Work Qualification

There are two nationally recognised qualifications available to paid and voluntary support workers which are delivered through a series of workshops and work place assessment.

  • QCF Certificate in Youth Work (Level 2) -For youth support workers
  • QCF Diploma in Youth Work (Level 3) -For youth support workers in charge

These qualifications are made up of a combination of units mandatory and optional. The courses are accredited by  ABC Awards (opens in a new window)

Sexual Health Training

This training is available throughout the year and is delivered by the Dorset Sexual Health Team. The following courses are available:

  • Contraception
  • Healthy relationships

Dates are circulated when courses become available.

Other courses available

We can also arrange training for specific needs such as:

  • Manual handling
  • First aid
  • Food safety
  • Youth support worker in charge training

I have seen a training course that I would like to attend - what do I do now?

You will need to complete the training application form (word, 59kb) (opens in a new window) , and ask your line manager to sign and complete the supporting statement and then send it to the administrator for training and staff development by email or post. If you require any further information about training please contact the Administrator for Training and Staff Development.
