Bridport Museum

Bridport Museum

The museum has permanent displays and a programme of temporary exhibitions. It also has a Local and Family History Centre across the street in Gundry Lane with a wide range of materials for people researching their local or family history with access to online family history resources.

Bridport is believed to be a late Saxon town dating from the time of Alfred the Great (871-899). It is from the time of King John (1199 - 1216) that Bridport became a unique town in its own right. Bridport has been the world's foremost exponent of quality rope and net making.

The majority of hangman's nooses used in England were made in the town as well as the 66 world cup net, Wimbledon tennis nets and the arrester nets for the space shuttle. A thriving industry continues in the town to this day.
