Portland Museum

A small museum in the heart of the island, featuring the many aspects of Portland history: its geology, archaeology, industry, social history, maritime history and much more.

Founded by Dr Marie Stopes in 1930 and gifted to the people of Portland, the two historic cottages boast a connection with the famous birth control pioneer, and also local author Thomas Hardy, who chose Avice's Cottage as the home of his heroine in the novel "The Wellbeloved".
