Designation Orders for Dorchester, Bridport and West Bay

Alcohol consumption in public places Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001

The Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 allows West Dorset District Council to designate an area for the purposes of the Act if the council is satisfied that there is nuisance being caused to the public or incidents of disorder and these are associated with drinking in that area. The Council through its Licensing and Appeals Committee at its meeting held on 31 January 2007 made an order under the Act designating the areas referred to below. The order will take effect on 31 March 2007.

The effect of the order is that as from the 31 March 2007 it is an offence if a person fails to comply with a request from a uniformed police constable or uniformed police community support officer to stop drinking any intoxicating liquor and/or fails to hand over to that officer any containers of such liquor in the designated area. It is an arrestable offence, which carries with it a maximum fine of level 2 on the standard scale (currently £500) if convicted.The designated area is as follows:-

Acland Road, Albert Road, All Saints Road, Allington Street, Allington Terrace, Alexandra Terrace, Charles Street, Chesil Place, Cornhill, Cornwall Road, Fairfield Road, Gallows Hill, Great Western Road, High East Street, High West Street, High Street Fordington, Icen Way, Linden Avenue, Maumbury Road, New Street, Prince's Street, Salisbury Street, Somerleigh Road, South Street, South Walks Road, Trinity Street, Upper Fairfield Road, West Street, West Walks Road, Weymouth Avenue and Wollaston Road.

Other areas

Antelope Walk, Borough Gardens, Bowling Alley Walk, Dorchester West Railway Station, Footpath between South Street, via Tudor Arcade to Charles Street, The Forum Centre, Hardye Arcade, Maumbury Rings, Napiers Mite, Passageway between Trinity Street (by the Trinity Club) and Somerleigh Road, Passageway between Trinity Street and South Street (by bank), Passageway from Trinity Street (by public house and taxi rank) to South Street, Salisbury Field, Salisbury Walk, South Street Passage (between South Street and Charles Street), South Walks, Tennis Courts by West Walks Road, Tudor Arcade, West Walks.

The effect of the order was that from the 16 September 2005 it is an offence if a person fails to comply with a request from a police officer to stop drinking any intoxicating liquor and/or fails to hand over to that officer any containers of such liquor in the designated area. It is an arrestable offence, which carries with it a maximum fine of level 2 on the standard scale (currently £500) if convicted.

The designated area is as follows:-

Bridport - Barrack Street, Chancery Lane, Church Street, Downes Street, East Street, Folly Mill Lane, Globe Lane, Gundry Lane, King Street, North Street, Rax Lane, Rope Walks, South Street, St Michael's Lane, Tannery Road, The Tanyard, Victoria Grove and West Street.

West Bay - The Esplanade, Quayside, Station Road and West Bay Road.

Other areas:

Bridport - Borough Gardens, Bucky Doo Square, Mountfield, Millennium Green, Plottingham, Riverside Gardens, St Mary's Playing Field and the Public Car Parks at; East Street, Hope Terrace, Magistrates Court, Rope Walks, West Street and Wykes Court.

West Bay - Beach next to the Esplanade, East Beach, The Pier, Pier Terrace, The Quay and the Public Car Parks at; Bridport Arms, East Beach, The Esplanade, The George Hotel, The Mound, Quayside, Station Yard and West Bay Road.
