Great Ovens
Great Ovens is an area of heathland off Morden Road near Sandford.
Introduction:
Great Ovens is managed privately and by the Herpetological Conservation Trust (HCT), with an area size of 88 ha. Great Ovens is located off Morden Road near Sandford, with a small car park opposite main site entrance. The Forestry Commission, housing, farmland and Morden Road borders this area of lowland heath. The south facing hill dominating the northern area is known as White Hill, from here the changes from dry heath wet heath can be seen. Two ponds, one of which is well established, allowing for a variety of dragon and damselfly to flourish. This site is designated as a Special Scientific Site of Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA).
