WreckMap Britain 2006

WreckMap Britain is a project organised by the Nautical Archaeological Society, which aims to get divers to collect information on wrecks they dive on during 2006

Following a successful pilot scheme in 2005 the Nautical Archaeological Society will be running WreckMap Britain 2006 which aims to get UK divers to collect and report basic archaeological and biological information about a wreck site that they dive on during 2006.

It is hoped to encourage as many of the 100,000 active divers in the UK as possible to participate as a part of their normal diving activities, by taking a recording slate with them when they do a planned dive on a wreck site, recording what they see and then reporting back to the Nautical Archaeological Society.

For each dive site recorded, the submitted data will be collated and placed on the Nautical Archaeological Society website where it will be available for anybody to see and use for dive planning and site interpretation. In addition, for each site:

  • biological data will be submitted to the Marine Conservation Society for inclusion in its SeaSearch project.
  • archaeological data will be submitted to the appropriate National Archive and, for Dorset, the Historic Environment Record Archive.
