Durlston Country Park
Project details and progress photographs for The Durlston World Heritage Gateway Project.
Background
Durlston Country Park is one of two country parks managed by Dorset County Council and is a gateway to England's first natural World Heritage Site. It comprises over 100 hectares of coastal grassland and sea cliffs, and is one of the best places in Britain for watching birds and a wide range of other wildlife. The sea, cliffs, limestone downland and hay meadows are home to a variety of flora and fauna - over 500 plant species, over 250 bird varieties, 34 types of butterfly and much more.
The project
It is proposed that the castle at the country park will become a focus for visitors with a new exhibition space, local food cafe and functions facilities. The existing visitor centre will be converted into a learning centre that can be used for school groups, family activities, courses and training. As well as restoring the castle, the project will lead to improved facilities for events and activities for local people and visitors.
The project is procured and project managed by Dorset Property.
