Statement of purpose

The statement of purpose for adoption sets out the purpose, policy, principles and aims of Dorset County Council's Adoption Service.

The objectives of the Adoption Service are:

  • To maintain a sufficient number of adopted placements in relation to the numbers, ages, range and needs of children for whom adoption is in their best interests

  • To increase the number of children adopted from the care system, in line with government targets

  • To endeavour to recruit adopters from diverse backgrounds, including black and minority ethnic groups, to reflect the needs of children who are, or may be placed for adoption

  • To develop a range of adoption support services, including practical, financial and therapeutic services, in partnership with other relevant agencies

  • To ensure that the Children's Services Directorate employs staff with appropriate and sufficient skills, knowledge and experience to deliver the Adoption Service

  • To ensure that staff employed have access to information, literature and training in skills, knowledge and changes in legislation

  • To ensure that applicants for inter-country adoption are provided with an appropriate service from skilled and experienced workers

Aims and principles

The main aim of Dorset Children's Services directorate is to promote the wellbeing and development of each child throughout its childhood by:

  • Ensuring secure care

  • Protecting the child from harm

  • Respecting and promoting cultural ties and identity, and

  • Promoting life chances
