Total Communication Symbol

Information and useful resources to help us in our aim to further increase the use of Total Communication methods for people with learning disabilities in Dorset.

Many people with learning disabilities have difficulties with communication.

Studies show that:

  • Between 50-90% of people with learning disabilities have communication difficulties
  • About 60% have some skills in symbolic communication, such as speech, signs or picture symbols
  • About 20% have no verbal communication, but communicate with intention
  • About 20% do not communicate with intention

    Everyone has the right to be supported in communicating their wishes and needs. The PAN Dorset Total Communication strategy group have developed a Bill of Rights for people who have communication needs.
