Trading standards - education and information

School group

We provide information to help educate consumers and businesses about their rights, so that there are fewer misunderstandings. We can provide talks, displays and leaflets, and we regularly attend community events.

We have provided information below, to help you find out more about how we educate consumers and businesses.

See our most recent news releases to find out more about what we are currently doing.

Consumer education

We try to help consumers become confident and knowledgeable by informing the public about their consumer rights. Many consumer problems could be avoided by raising awareness of their legal rights when buying goods and services.

We help to educate consumers by:

  • Providing advice packs and guidance leaflets
  • Highlighting issues in the local media
  • Writing articles for 'Your Dorset' and contributing to other local publications
  • Providing talks to a wide variety of community groups and schools on request
  • Making sure that vulnerable people know about community safety issues
  • Visiting events and shows with our mobile display unit, giving information on important issues. Officers are also available to give advice.
  • Keeping the website updated
  • Providing displays on important issues

If you belong to a local group that would like to hear more about consumer issues, or if you would like guidance leaflets on your basic rights when buying goods and services, please contact Directgov (opens in a new window)  .
