Admission appeals

If you have received written notification that your child has been refused a school place you can appeal to an appeal panel.

To appeal for a place at a community and voluntary controlled (VC) school you should either write to the School Admissions Team requesting an appeal form and enclose an A5 self addressed envelope or download the form from this website.

If you are appealing for a place for your child in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 (Key Stage 1) at a school which operates class sizes of 30 you will need to use the specified form and make an infant class size appeal. This means that you can only appeal for a place if you feel that:

  • The decision to refuse admission was not one which a reasonable admission authority would have made in the circumstances of the case or
  • Your child would have been offered a place if the admission arrangements had been properly implemented.

NB If you have applied for a place at a primary/infant/first school, the letter that you have received from the School Admissions Team informing you that your application was unsuccessful will state whether this was due to infant class size limits.  If this is the case, the school will operate class sizes of 30 and you should complete this form.

For any other year group or primary/infant/first schools which operate with class sizes of less than 30, you should use the standard appeal form.

To appeal for a place at a voluntary aided (VA) or foundation school you should contact the Clerk to the Governing Body at the school and request an appeal form.

Once you have completed your appeal form, this should be sent to:

Appeals Team

Democratic Services
Dorset County Council
County Hall
Colliton Park
Dorchester, DT1 1XJ.

Although, some voluntary aided or foundation schools ask that you send your form back to them in the first instance.

Information about what happens after you have sent your appeal form can be found in the information booklet which can be downloaded from this website.
