Museums and galleries - information and advice

Key aims of the Dorset County Museums Advisory Service

  • To provide leadership and advice to help make heritage accessible to all communities in Dorset. To achieve this we will work with a range of museums and heritage centres on initiatives celebrating and conserving Dorset's unique human and natural history

  • To be the strategic voice of Dorset's museums, dealing directly with regional and national agencies

  • To fulfil the role of Curatorial Adviser to Dorset's independent, community museums, providing advice on a wide range of operational issues and supporting the Museums Accreditation process

  • To work with museum and heritage partners to attract external funding

  • To represent the interests of Dorset and East Devon museums on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site Steering Group

  • To work with regional and national agencies to promote, influence and bring resources to Dorset and the Jurassic Coast

  • To work with Dorset County Museum and the Red House Christchurch as museums benefiting from significant grant aid from Dorset County Council

  • To Work with the Dorset Museums Association to enhance the effectiveness of Dorset's museums

  • To work with Dorset's professional museums on initiatives of joint interest, especially those in receipt of significant Dorset County Council grants

  • To administer the Dorset County Council Small Grants Scheme for Accredited museums

  • To develop new partnerships with local government, archives, heritage centres and unaccredited museums.
