Traffic signal equipment
Information on traffic signaling equipment throughout Dorset, pedestrian crossings, details on how to request portable traffic signals and how to report a traffic signal fault.
We are responsible for 297 traffic signal sites within Dorset (including the boroughs of Weymouth and Portland, and Christchurch). Of these, 82 are signal controlled junctions, 117 PELICAN/PUFFIN/Pegasus crossings, 11 TOUCAN crossings, 57 school crossing wig-wags (flashing amber lights), and 30 variable message or vehicle activated signs.
In addition, the council has access to over 80 CCTV cameras within Bridport, Weymouth and Dorchester and five weather stations at strategic locations across the entire county (known as Icelert stations). These weather stations provide essential meteorological and road surface information to enable accurate predictions regarding road surface conditions. This ensures an efficient, proactive, winter road treatment programme.
We are also working in partnership with the Weymouth Transport Package to deliver eight new signalised junctions that will replace a number of highly congested roundabouts, as well as the refurbishment of two existing junctions; pinnacle to the Weymouth network. In addition to the installation of these junctions the Weymouth Transport Package also includes five proposed Puffin Crossings in various locations around Weymouth to enhance pedestrian safety.
Report a fault with traffic signalling equipment
- Portable traffic signals
Portable traffic signals are used for temporary situations.
- Weather Stations (Icelert)
Dorset County Council has a high-tech approach to deal with the effects of winter weather on the road network, and operates 24 hours a day from October to April using a computerised 'Icelert' system.
- Pedestrian Crossings
There are five different types of formal pedestrian crossings in the county, four are traffic signal controlled, and the fifth is the zebra crossing. All signalled crossings are operated by pushing a button and waiting for signals to stop the vehicular traffic and then informing the pedestrian by way of lit (and when appropriate, audible or tactile) signals when it should be safe to cross.
