Countryside Access Management

Under the Highways Act 1980, the Countryside Access Team is responsible for maintaining Dorset's network by keeping rights of way free from obstructions such as barbed wire, excessive undergrowth, ploughing and cropping, ensuring that gates, stiles and footbridges are kept in good condition, way marking and signposting.

Working closely with landowners and Parish Council Rights of Way Liaison Officers, four Area Officers investigate reports received from members of the public and user groups. Three outdoor field teams of two are then directed to carry out the necessary work.

Generally, it is the duty of landowners and occupiers not to endanger or inconvenience users of rights of way.

If you are a landowner and want more information on how to manage rights of way on your land please visit the Public Rights of way pages or contact the team.

The following pages explain how we are planning to manage our rights of way in future through the Rights of Way Improvement Plan. There is also information on the Local Access Forum who provides independent advice on the management of access in Dorset.

For general information about rights of way and how to use them please visit the Public rights of way page.

If would like to help manage access in your area there are various way of getting involved. Visit the getting involved section for more information on the Adopt a Path Scheme and Parish Liaison Officers.

When you're out and about enjoying Dorset's countryside please remember:

The countryside code:

  • Be safe, plan ahead and follow any signs

  • Leave gates and property as you find them

  • Protect plants and animals and take your litter home

  • Keep dogs under close control

  • Consider other people
