Adopt a Path

View from Charlton Marshall

There are more than 6,000 public rights of way in Dorset, which cover nearly 3,000 miles. By adopting a footpath, bridleway, byway or restricted byway you are helping us to keep Dorset's network of paths usable for everyone to enjoy.

Volunteers are encouraged to:

  • Walk or ride their paths on a regular basis, a minimum of three or four times a year
  • Report any obstructions or problems that they encounter on their path/s to the Countryside Access Team  or Parish Rights of Way Liaison Officers. These might include barbed wire, electric fences, crops, poor signage, faulty gates or stiles
  • Carry out minor clearance and way marking of their paths

Adopters are not expected to liaise directly with landowners, although they can if they wish.
