GCSE and A-Level courses

Leeson House has an excellent reputation for providing the very highest quality field courses. We cater for GCSE geography controlled assessments, geography, geology and biology at AS and A2 levels and field work for the International Baccalaureate.

Leeson House is within easy distance of many excellent localities for both physical and human geography together with superb geology along the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site. The Isle of Purbeck also offers a wide range of habitats for ecology and biology field work.

AS, A2 and IB geography

Physical geography topics available include, but are not limited to:

  • Coastal processes and land forms
  • Coastal management and protection
  • Rivers and flood management
  • Vegetation succession

Human geography topics available include, but are not limited to:

  • Rural and urban settlements
  • Rural and urban re branding
  • Crowded coasts
  • Tourism

AS, A2 and IB biology

The grounds of Leeson House provide a rich and varied range of habitats within which a wide range of Biology units can be taught including:

  • Introduction to ecology and sampling techniques
  • Pond comparison study,- use of dichotomous keys, Simpson's diversity index
  • "Mark and Recapture" study and Lincoln Index
  • Mammal trapping, bird ringing demonstrations and moth trapping
  • Woodland and hedgerow studies
  • Qualitative studies on lichen

By travelling further afield within Purbeck the following units can be taught

  • Vegetation succession at Studland Dunes
  • Freshwater ecology at West Mills on the River Piddle, adaptations and indicator species
  • Marine zonation at Kimmeridge Bay Marine Reserve
  • Heathland regeneration in Wareham Forest
  • Inter and intra specific competition and measuring Biomass.
  • Conservation management at Durlston Country Park

Visits to local organic and intensive farms can also be arranged.
