Waste - a joined up approach
West Dorset residents are currently recycling nearly a third of their waste using the kerbside recycling service and recycling sites. This is a fantastic effort but we want to increase that amount. The kerbside recycling service now covers 100% of the district, bringing recycling to the doorstep to encourage everyone to do their bit for the environment.
A strategic approach - the 3Rs
While recycling plays an important role in the way we all manage our waste, it is equally important to consider the real positive effects of waste reduction. By simply reducing the amounts of waste we generate and re-using items we can conserve more resources, reduce the impact that waste transportation has on the environment, help achieve our statutory recycling targets and avoid unnecessary disposal.
In rural West Dorset, reducing the disposal of garden and kitchen waste by home composting is key to reducing the amounts of biodegradable waste sent to landfill. For more information about home composting and bin offers please see the related article at the top right hand side of this page.
West Dorset District Council has teamed up with local community group Bridport TLC to help promote council recycling services. Bridport TLC has been awarded funding from the Waste and Resources Action Programme to run four outdoor events, five activity days and recruit Household Recycling Advisors to offer help and support about waste matters on the doorstep. A program of events is available through the Bridport TLC website by clicking on the link on the right of the page.
Waste reduction is equally, if not more important than recycling. Recycling alone will not help resolve our reliance on landfill. Because of this we have produced a Reuse Directory full of useful hints and tips on how to reduce and reuse waste.
