Approximately six million obsolete pieces of electronic equipment are discarded in the UK annually.
Items such as computers, photocopiers and fax machines contain printed circuit boards that have valuable metals such as copper, gold and platinum in their components. Electronic equipment is also collected so that components such as disc drives in computers can be reused. Plastic castings can also be recycled, however with older machines the identification of plastic can be difficult.
