Construction and demolition waste

Quarrying and extraction of raw materials for use in construction can be unsightly and environmentally damaging in terms of air and visual pollution and increased transport.

Each year in the UK an estimated 72 million tonnes of waste arises from construction and demolition. Of this, 35% is recycled and 13% is used as low grade filler or landfill cover and 24% is landfilled as waste (information taken from the national survey carried out by the environment agency and DEFRA and reported in the 'Strategic Waste management Assessment'). Much more could be put to better use if separated at source. Waste materials that have been recovered from construction sites include masonry and mortar (which can be re-used as hardcore), slate cladding, roofing timbers, etc.
