Waste glass arisings in the UK are estimated to be around 2.5 million tonnes per annum. This is higher than the UK production of container glass of about 2.0 million tonnes per annum, partly because the UK imports a considerable amount of products, particularly wine, in green glass containers. The amount of glass recycled in the UK in 1997 was 511,000 tonnes, with an overall glass recycling rate of 26%.
