Wood

The total amount of wood waste arisings in the UK are about 750,000 tonnes per annum, of which about 300,000 tonnes is packaging.

Approximately 300,000 tonnes per year of waste wood is currently being recycled, and this is expected to increase to about 500,000 tonnes over the next few years.

The main secondary market is chipboard production. Other markets, such as much, animal bedding, and the all weather exercise rings for horses, are quite small by comparison. Sawdust obtained from shredding wood packaging can be used as an absorbent material for cleaning up liquid spills. Roofing timbers can be used in the furniture industry.

Wood Waste are utilised as a fuel throughout the UK wood processing industry. This is because of the limited opportunities to market waste wood as commercial fuel, due to the high transport costs, and because of the growing use of waste wood in chipboard production.
