Food complaints

Under the Food Safety Act 1990 it is an offence to sell food which is unfit for human consumption or is so contaminated that it would not be reasonable to expect it to be consumed in that condition.

District councils have a legal duty to investigate complaints regarding foreign matter, for example stones, metal, glass, paper, plastic, or unfit food such as mould and odour.

Make a food or food premises complaint online.

The Trading Standards Department of Dorset County Council deals with separate food complaint issues such as descriptive issues (for example misleading labelling or dietary claims), food not of the nature, substance or quality demanded (for example mutton sold as lamb), ingredients and compositional issues.

The issue of compensation is not dealt with by the district council so you may feel it more appropriate to approach the retailer/producer directly with your complaint.
