Enquiries

The Historic Environment Record (HER) can be consulted by telephone, letter, email, or in person at County Hall, Dorchester (by appointment only).

A dedicated space has been created for users of the Historic Environment Record, which provides a safe, attractive and private working environment for visitors. Wheelchair access is possible via a lift.

Points to consider when planning an HER enquiry:

  • If you are interested in a particular area, try to let us have a clearly-marked map or a grid reference and some indication of the size of your area of interest
  • Please be specific about your requirements and the purpose of your enquiry. This will help us decide how best to respond. For example, a landowner planning an Environmental Stewardship application will need a different type of information, perhaps presented in a different way, from a student working on a thesis. It is particularly important that you should tell us if you are thinking of making a planning application
  • Visitors are asked to book an appointment. Space is limited, and we have other commitments; without an appointment, you may be disappointed. Most enquiries are dealt with by letter or email, and we will tell you if we think you would find a visit useful
  • A direct HER consultation is recommended for in-depth research, planning or land-management purposes. A simplified version of the HER, suitable for general interest and basic research, is available through the Heritage Gateway website (opens in a new window)
  • We make every effort to deal with enquiries quickly and free of charge. However, some searches are quite time-consuming, and it may be necessary to make a charge to recover the cost of photocopying or time spent. We will always tell you in advance if this is likely, or we may suggest that you modify your enquiry
