CARN cards

The Dorset History Centre is part of the County Archive Research Network (CARN). All visitors will need to show a CARN reader's ticket to make full use of the sources held at the Dorset History Centre.

If you do not have a CARN ticket you can apply for one from us free of charge. If you have already have a card issued by another record office in the CARN scheme, this will be valid here also.

CARN tickets can be issued on the day of your visit. You will need to complete a simple form and produce some proof of identity with your name, current address and signature such as:

  • Driving licence (which contains all three pieces of information required on one document)
  • Bank / credit card
  • Passport (note that UK passports do not give your address)
  • Bank statement
  • Utility bill
  • Post Office savings book
  • Disabled person's registration
  • Pension book

Some of these will need to be used together.

CARN tickets remain valid for four years and can be used to gain access to over 60 participating record offices in England and Wales.

If you do not have the necessary identification we can issue a day ticket. However, please note:

  • Day tickets do not automatically give you access to original records
  • They are only valid on the date of issue
  • Repeated applications for day tickets cannot be accepted and you will be expected to obtain and produce a full CARN card for subsequent visits
