Dorset Homelessness Review and Strategy 2008-2013

The Homelessness Act 2002 says local authorities must review homelessness and homelessness services in their areas and publish a homelessness strategy based on their review at least every five years.

The Dorset Homelessness Strategy is jointly prepared by:

  • Christchurch Borough Council
  • East Dorset District Council
  • North Dorset District Council
  • Purbeck District Council
  • West Dorset District Council
  • Weymouth & Portland Borough Council

In 2003 each council published an individual strategy but it is felt that the outcomes of the strategy's action plan will be more positive if a joint strategy is produced.

The action plan concentrates on four main areas:

  • More effective use of temporary accommodation
  • Improved access to appropriate homelessness services, particularly prevention services
  • Tackling affordability
  • Reducing homelessness through a variety of initiatives

The strategy has been out to consultation and the feedback has been incorporated. It is expected that the strategy will be adopted formally by the six councils in September/October.
