Who can stand for election

You must:

• be a British citizen, a qualifying citizen of a Commonwealth country, a citizen of the Irish Republic or a citizen of another member state of the European Union 
• be 18 years of age by the date of the election and
• be a registered local government voter for the county of Dorset or
• have occupied, as owner or tenant, any land or other premises in the county for the whole of the previous twelve months or
• have resided in the county during the whole of the previous twelve months and
• not be disqualified by statute

But you cannot stand for election if: 

• in the last 5 years you have been in prison or on a suspended sentence for three months or more
• you are the subject of a bankruptcy restrictions
• you are en employee of Dorset County Council
• you have been disqualified by statute
