Weymouth showcase scheme
Electronic variable messaging signs and car park guidance systems, along with real time passenger information and new bus stops and shelters are being delivered as part of the Weymouth Transport Package.
Work has started on improving the bus stops on the Portland-Weymouth-Dorchester corridor, with Dorset Works Organisation starting at stops on Portland and working north towards Dorchester.
Bus stops are being measured against national guidelines to ensure that stops have:
- Flag, with route information and name of bus stop
- Raised kerbs
- Yellow road markings for buses
- Timetable information
There will be 50 refurbished bus stops, 30 additional shelters and around 130 stops will be equipped with real time passenger information.
The contract for supplying the real time passenger information system has been awarded to
ACIS (opens in a new window)
.
Electronic signs will also be installed around the borough guiding motorists to available car parking space, these will be located on:
- Granby Way
- Swannery Bridge
- King Street
- A354 Weymouth Relief Road
- Commercial Road
These will be complemented with real time 'flag' signs at the relevant car parks: Swannery, Park Street, Melcombe Regis, Harbourside, the multi-storey and Cosens Quay.
There will also be five variable message signs (VMS) in the borough which will be used to advise motorists of events and delays, and can also be used to display road safety information.
These will be on the A353 Preston Road, B3157 Chickerell Road, A354 relief road, A354 Weymouth Way and on the A354 on Boot Hill.
As part of the electronic signing, a signage strategy has being drawn up to de-clutter the signage in and around Weymouth and Portland.
