Weymouth cycleway - Eastern Route

The Eastern Route will link Radipole Park Drive cycleway to Preston Beach Road cycleway and footway.

The route will be signposted from Radipole Park Drive, over Alexander bridge in Radipole Gardens, along Westbourne Road, on to Cranford Avenue and into the Lodmoor Country Park.

From the country park cyclists can join up with the Preston Beach Road cycleway or go through the park to join up with the relief road cycleway.

The route is scheduled to be signposted by the end of March 2013.

Proposed work

Work due to start on Monday 29 October to resurface Alexander Bridge in Weymouth was postponed again. This work is now programmed for May 2013.

The bridge was programmed to be closed for four days in October to apply a new surface which aims to reduce the noise from users of the bridge.

The weather forecast looked wet for a second week in a row so it was decided to postpone the work until the weather improves.

Further information will be available when the work and closure have been rescheduled.

The bridge deck is being resurfaced with a low noise surface.

The work is due to be carried out before the eastern cycle route is signposted - which will send more bikes over the bridge.

Future works

The Local Sustainable Transport Fund will include the following work as part of its 2014/15 programme:

  • crossing point on Dorchester Road between Westbourne Road and Cranford Avenue
  • improving the access to Alexander Bridge from Hanover Road
