Deprivation

There are three main data sources available on deprivation and poverty. The most significant is the nationally produced Index of deprivation. The other two are locally produced - the Poverty Mapping exercise and the Dorset Deprivation Indicies. All three can be useful tools, particularly for funding bids.

  • The Index of Deprivation: 2004, 2007 and 2010

This English Indices of Deprivation helps identify and prioritise areas to assist the government in narrowing the gap between deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of the country. The Indicies have now been produced three times - 2000, 2004 and 2007, with the method being modified and improved each time. The 2010 Index of Deprivation, released on 24 March 2011, is now available below.

  • Poverty mapping

Every year since 1998 there has been a poverty mapping exercise carried out, resulting in a published leaflet or web page giving an update on the current position.

  • Dorset Deprivation Indices, Feb 2005

The Dorset Deprivation Indices is a series of six reports produced by the Research and Information Section of the County Council, which present the results of the Dorset Deprivation Indices (DDI) for each of the district local authorities within the County. The Dorset Deprivation Indices are constructed exclusively from information from the 2001 Census and cover the geographic area for which Dorset County Council is responsible for the delivery of its services.

  • The Child Well-being Index (CWI) 2009

In 2009 the Department for Communities and Local Government published an Index which seeks to illustrate levels of well being among children.

  • Worklessness

This section looks at the distribution of worklessness across each of the districts and boroughs in Dorset.
