Support for Reading and Literacy

One of the best ways to encourage pupils to become enthusiastic readers is to expose them to as stimulating a collection of resources as possible.

The School Library Service provides access to a large collection of such resources suitable for Early Years to the Sixth Form.

Young people who read widely for enjoyment benefit both emotionally and intellectually. The School Library Service aims to help schools to provide access to reading material with a wide appeal which can be used both within literacy teaching and for reading for pleasure.

Such material is available for both long and short term hire and can be selected at our base in Blandford, as part of an annual Service Level Agreement or a Pay-As-You-Use basis.

Material available includes:

  • Fiction for all abilities and tastes

  • General interest non-fiction

  • Fiction on CD and in large text formats

  • Story sacks to make early reading fun and foster creativity

  • Resources specifically linked to the literacy curriculum including sets of guided readers

  • Themed collections to support reader development

  • Collection of short-listed titles for the major fiction awards

Help and advice on ways to develop pupils' interest in reading is also available. This includes:

  • Advice and help with setting up and running reading groups

  • Ideas for promoting a whole school reading culture

  • Suggestions for activities to stimulate an interest in reading for pleasure, including use of on-line resources and initiatives such as The New Horizons Book Award

  • Advice and training for school librarians to enable them to promote reading effectively
