2) The design philosophy

Design details for the project at Barton Hill House.

The new accommodation block is situated on land to the east of the existing buildings. The visual impact of the new block has been minimised by situating the two storey accommodation away from the boundary with the height of the new block reducing to single storey towards the boundary.

The elevations have been designed to harmonise with the adjacent 1990's style. External materials are also in keeping with other local buildings, consisting of brick walling and slate materials.

The main entrance to the new building will be accessed via a circular paved courtyard area and social space. A glazed entrance link separates the main dormitory from the Head of Boarding's accommodation.

The accommodation block has been designed to meet the requirements of Building Regulations Approved Document Part M.  A parking bay designated for people with disabilities is also provided. Access to the main entrance of the new accommodation block will be via a level approach. Internally, a platform lift is provided together with a fully accessible bedroom and shower room.
