What is climate change mitigation?
Mitigation looks to slow down global warming by reducing carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gas emissions which cause it. This is primarily achieved through energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable transport.
Climate change mitigation seeks to reduce the impacts of the greenhouse effect by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions by promoting energy efficiency and sustainable transport modes and an increase in the amount of energy produced from renewable sources such as wind, water, solar energy or biomass.

Dorset's carbon footprint
In Dorset, in 2007, we produced 2.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO²) - 37% from energy use in our homes, 31.5 % from energy use in businesses and 31.5% from fuel in road transport. This equates to 6.9 tonnes per person in the county.

Dorset's approach to mitigating climate change
In terms of mitigating climate change (i.e. reducing CO2 and the other greenhouse gases that cause it) the county council is working with a wide range of partners, including all of Dorset's district/borough councils, through the delivery of a 'Climate Change Mitigation Strategic Framework for Dorset'.
