Tree maintenance and surgery

The arboricultural section of Dorset Highways grounds services division manages the county council's tree stock. The service will also undertake similar work for commercial customers.

The arboricultural section has access to a wide range of electronic diagnostic equipment which is used to determine the extent of decay in trees. These procedures have helped to save many trees from being unnecessarily felled. In addition, the arboriculture team provide advice and guidance on planning and development issues and deal with public enquiries related to tree problems.

Here are a list of the the physical tree works that Ground Services undertake. If you require any of these services then please see the contact details below:

  • Planting
  • Transplanting of young and semi-mature trees
  • Pruning
  • Crown lifting
  • Crown reduction and balancing
  • Removing deadwood
  • Felling
  • Stump grinding
  • Tree inspections undertaken and advice given

The county's arboricultural officers and manager are fully qualified and experienced to carry out tree inspections. They do this in accordance with BS5837:2005, which is the British Standards Institution recommendations on how to protect trees during development. They also produce reports which highlight the works that are required together with a recommended timescale for the works to be carried out. Inspections are also carried out for other local authorities upon request.

For further information about the arboricultural team or queries related to tree issues please contact the Arboricultural Manager Steve Maros or for detailed information on pricing/quotations please contact John Earp.
