Dorset's approach to mitigating climate change
In terms of mitigating climate change (i.e. reducing CO2 and the other greenhouse gases that cause it) the county council is working with a wide range of partners, including all of Dorset's district/borough councils, through the delivery of a 'Climate Change Mitigation Strategic Framework for Dorset'.
This comprises three key strategies:
- The Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Renewable Energy Strategy (2005) - this sets out how to realise the renewable heat and electricity potential in the county, is currently being implemented by the Dorset Energy Group (DEG)
- The Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Energy Efficiency Strategy (2009) - this aims to achieve a step change in energy efficiency performance in the domestic, business, public and community sectors in Dorset, as well as, tackle fuel poverty. This strategy is also being implemented by the Dorset Energy Group
- The Local Transport Plan 3 – this provides the strategic framework for delivering sustainable transport locally. The forthcoming review will consider how these plans will meet The Government's challenging carbon reduction targets (and address climate change adaptation)
In addition to the countywide approach the West Dorset Strategic Partnership have also recently produced their own climate change strategy for West Dorset.
-
Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Energy Efficiency Strategy
In 2007 Dorset County Council, with funding from the local authorities in Dorset and Government Office for the South West commissioned the Centre for Sustainable Energy to develop an Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan for Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole. The Dorset Energy Group has steered the development of the strategy.

-
Carbon management
The county council is actively reducing its own carbon footprint from the carbon dioxide produced from fossil fuel energy used in its buildings including all of its schools, street lighting, transport and travel and the waste it produces.
- Dorset Energy Group
The Dorset Energy Group (DEG) is the body that co-ordinates and monitors the delivery of the key actions laid out in the Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Renewable Energy Strategy and the new Energy Efficiency Strategy.
