The monumental Longhouse is now complete and has been enjoyed by visiting school and adult groups.

It has been a long time coming, but our Longhouse building project is finished. In May, centre manager Luke Winter welcomed the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Mrs Valerie Lane-Fox Pitt-Rivers to officially open their latest facility. Chief Executive David Jenkins and council Chairman John Wilson also joined in the celebrations.  The new residential accommodation, a 24m-long, bow-sided, chestnut shingle-roof Viking Longhouse, is based on evidence from Danish royal garrisons and took three years to complete.

This is a unique opportunity to offer school groups an ancient living experience. During their stay, school children experience all aspects of ancient life. Dressed as Vikings they prepare and cook their own meals from local produce; tend to crops and livestock, play ancient games and listen to stories from the past. As the day draws to a close they fall asleep on soft sheepskins.
