2) The design, external works and landscape

Details of the design, external works and landscape for the project at Maiden Newton Children's Centre.

The design:

The new single storey building provides an internal area of approximately 116 metre2.  Within the building there is a main circulation space, staff, ancillary accommodation and secure children's areas.  Outdoor play areas within a protected area are also provided.

The materials chosen compliment the adjacent school buildings.

External works and landscape:

The existing belt of mature trees between the road and the children's centre have been retained as an important landscape feature.  Existing grassed areas are also retained.  The existing sports field retains in situ.

Due to the encroachment by the new building on the netball court, the court has been repositioned 5 metres towards the south.

A mixture of hard and soft landscape areas have been provided at the east end of the building for play and recreation in a secure, gated play area including some safety surfacing.  The main entrance to the children's centre is accessed via a paved entrance/reception area with seating and planting.
