Gambling Act 2005 - Statement of Gambling Policy

In accordance with Section 349 of the Gambling Act 2005, the Purbeck District Council has published a statement of its gambling policy. The 2005 Act repeals all previous legislation in relation to betting, gaming, lotteries and amusements.

Much of the licensing and regulation in relation to gambling is now the responsibility of the Gambling Commission.  However a number of important regulatory functions in relation to gambling have been passed to local authorities.  In future the Council will be responsible for:

  • licensing premises for gambling activities
  • considering notices given for temporary use of premises for gambling
  • granting permits for gaming and gaming machines in clubs
  • regulating gaming and gaming machines in premises licensed for alcohol
  • granting permits to family entertainment centres for certain lower stake gaming machines
  • granting permits for prize gaming
  • considering notices given for occasional betting at tracks
  • registering small societies' lotteries.
