Historic parks and gardens in Purbeck

Lulworth Castle

The Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England is compiled and maintained by English Heritage under the National Heritage Act 1983.

Entries are graded in the same way as listed buildings. Unlike listed buildings, there is no provision for statutory protection, partly due to the organic and changeable nature of gardens.  Planning Policy Statement 5 (PPS5): Planning for the Historic Environment (opens in a new window) instructs that there is a presumption in favour of conservation of registered parks and gardens.

All development proposals relating to Grade I and II* gardens must be referred to English Heritage.

The Purbeck District currently has 5 entries on the Register:

  • Charborough Park II*

  • Creech Grange II*

  • Durlston Castle II

  • Encombe II*

  • Lulworth Castle II
