Dementia

The term 'dementia' describes a collection of symptoms, including a decline in memory, reasoning and communication skills, and a gradual loss of skills needed to carry out daily activities.

These symptoms are caused by changes in the brain caused by physical diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

Dementia can affect people of any age, but is most common in older people.

We have provided a link to the National Dementia Strategy, on the right of this page, as we are implementing the National Strategy in Dorset. You may also wish to look at the recent Health Scrutiny Committee review of dementia services in Dorset.
