Affordable Housing Development

Councils within Dorset are actively involved with the provision of affordable housing and measures to increase the number of homes that are developed each year.

However, as the councils no longer own or build homes themselves, development activities centre on the provision of Strategic Leadership and Enabling Services to optimise local influence, resources and the work of delivery partners.

Affordable Housing Planning Policies form a key part of this role whilst Rural Enabling Services offer dedicated support and resources to parish councils and rural communities to deliver affordable housing in countryside settlements.

Councils also have responsibilities to monitor schemes under construction and affordable housing completions as part of National Indicator NI155.

In terms of commissioning future schemes, Dorset County Council and the district and borough councils of Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole are now participating in the . Working closely with the Homes and Communities Agency (opens in a new window) and Registered Providers , this newly formed partnership is to become the sub-regional centre for affordable housing procurement. It is to focus on delivering the themed and place specific priorities identified through the Single Conversation process and the Local Investment Plan (2010).
