Dorset History Centre - local studies collection

Explore the extensive local studies collection at Dorset History Centre. Based in Dorchester, the centre is the local studies library for Dorset and the archives service for Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole.

Please note that the Dorset History Centre will be closed from 29 November 2010 and will reopen on 10 December 2010 to allow for the transfer of the Dorset authors collection from Dorchester Library.

Services

We can help with family history, local history or house history plus school and community projects and much more.  You can visit the history centre for free five days a week.  We hold a huge collection of documents (including parish registers) and books relating to the history of Dorset.  We offer a range of services, including copying of documents, a research service for enquirers who can't visit us in person, learning sessions, talks, publications for sale and more.

Accessibility

All the public rooms at the Dorset History Centre, including the search room, are situated on the ground floor with level access from outside via automatic doors.

There is also an accessible toilet at the centre and hearing loops are fitted at all the enquiry desks. In addition there are three disabled parking bays in the centre car park.
