Dorset Youth Offending Team (Dorset YOT)

The Dorset Youth Offending Team is a statutory partnership under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. The principle of partnership working has underscored its success in achieving key outcomes. Dorset YOT also works in partnership with other groups to achieve its aims both in preventing offending and reducing re offending.

Our aims

The strategic aims of the Youth Justice System in England and Wales are to:

  • Prevent offending

  • Reduce offending

  • Ensure the safe and effective use of custody

  • Increase victim and public confidence

How we work

The work of the Dorset YOT is underpinned by a set of principles that inform all we do.  We value the worth of all young people and by working with them and their families to prevent or reduce offending, we aim to assist the communities in which they live.  We are committed to challenging any behaviour that perpetuates discrimination and limits individuals from realising their potential.

Dorset YOT operates within a national framework of Youth Justice with the statutory responsibility to prevent offending and reduce re offending.  Dorset YOT delivers its services within the framework of Dorset County Councils' Corporate aims.  It contributes to the Dorset Strategic Partnership in particular through its work with the Community Safety Partnership.

The Dorset YOT delivers a comprehensive range of prevention and youth justice services across the whole of the County Council area using an appropriately skilled staff group from a range of relevant professional backgrounds.
