Business opportunities

The London 2012 Games presents many opportunities for Dorset businesses to get involved.

As the largest sporting event in the world, supported by a whole range of community and cultural celebrations, the Games require a range of services, supplies and materials on an unprecedented scale. Don't miss the chance for your business to benefit from this once in a lifetime opportunity.

To tender for official London 2012 contracts you must register your business on CompeteFor, a free procurement portal (see bottom of page).

Outdoor trading and advertising during the Games

If you wish to sell goods or services outdoors, or display certain advertisements, in Olympic zones during the Games you may require permission from the Olympic Delivery Authority (additional to any licence/permit granted from the Council or similar body etc).

Local businesses in the Weymouth and Portland area are encouraged to ensure they comply with the outdoor trading and advertising regulations which have been put in place by the Government for the London 2012 Games.

Temporary Games-time licenses and application process

The temporary regulations, which apply to designated zones, will ensure that unauthorised adverts and outside trading are properly controlled during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in order to protect authorised traders and prevent  'ambush' marketing and illegal traders.

The application process for those affected by the restrictions, which include premises with outdoor seating areas, is open until the end of March 2012 and is available online.  There is no charge for making these applications.

Applications for permission to advertise, where required, need to be made to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) by email or post.

Applications for permission to trade outdoors, where required, can be made to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) by email, post and online. The ODA is working closely with the local councils to apply the regulations as pragmatically as possible, to ensure the practical needs of local businesses and all those taking part in the Games are met.

Exemptions

Businesses and activities exempt from the restrictions include most existing shop signage and in-store advertising, advertising on buses and taxis carrying passengers through the defined zone and deliveries of food and newspapers. London 2012's website gives further information explaining who needs to apply for permission to advertise and trade.

The locations affected by the regulations within the Weymouth and Portland area include the water space within Weymouth Bay from White Nothe at Ringstead Bay to Durdle Point on Portland.

Designated Areas

The designated zone along the Esplanade extends from the sea to the frontage of the buildings on the town side of the Esplanade.  Other areas include King Street, the outer harbour; Trinity Road/Custom House Quay areas and the route to Portland and the Castletown area.

Businesses can check whether their location is affected by viewing the plans and using a postcode checker on London 2012 outdoor trading post code checker (opens in a new window) .

When will these regulations be in force? The regulations will be in place from Saturday 28 July- Sunday 12 August (Olympic period) and Friday 31 August - Friday 7 Sept (Paralympic period) 2012.

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council will endeavour to contact businesses who will be directly affected by these regulations to provide further guidance and advice.
