Friends of Nothe Gardens
Friends of Nothe Gardens
Setting up of the friends was instigated by Weymouth & Portland Borough Council following an outline initiative by the government to involve and allow ordinary citizens more say in the management and development of their environment. The current chair of the group is Stevie Durston.
What's happened on the Nothe over the last 12 months:
- The Friends have continued to regularly tend the flowerbed by the CEFAS building at Newton's Cove
- Friends have routinely helped our gardener, Terry, to collect litter around the gardens
- Maintenance of all seats in the gardens
- Second of five compartments cleared of scrub along the Nothe esplanade embankment
Events in the gardens for 2012
- 3 June D-Day Picnic (1-4pm)
- Teddy Bear's Picnic on Sunday 8 July (1pm - 4pm)
If you'd like to contact the Friends, please email roger@nothe-matters.co.uk or call 01305 838297.
Teddy Bear's Picnic 2012
Local families are invited to join the Friends of Nothe Gardens for their seventh annual Teddy Bear's Picnic taking place on Sunday 8th July from 1pm - 4pm on the grassed plateau near the gardener's hut.
If you want an afternoon of non-stop fun then make your way to the Nothe Gardens to take part in lots of free activities for the whole family to enjoy. There'll be the ever popular best dressed teddy competition, story telling, wacky races, a teddy bear nature stroll and many other exciting things to see and do. As always, a group will be playing a range of upbeat songs throughout the picnic for you all to enjoy.
Welcoming the Olympics
Friends of Nothe Gardens (FONG) were pleased to welcome the Olympic flag relay, carried by teams of local youngsters, en-route to the Nothe Fort. The group are actively considering schemes to help promote Weymouth's role in the 2012 games. New members are welcome so if you enjoy our gardens and are concerned about any aspect of their future then come along to the meeting and share your ideas.
Nothe Watch
One of the aims of the Friends is to encourage responsible use of the gardens. It falls to us to find ways to try and change the attitudes of a minority of people who spoil life for the majority.
A great deal of work has gone on behind the scenes to record anti-social behaviour (ASB) and crime that occurs on the Nothe. It's important to report all incidents of ASB/crime. This assists the police in focusing their efforts on the incident hot spots. You should report incidents to the Police on 101. If you would rather let Friends know (in non-urgent cases only) then please email nothe_friends@btinternet.com.
If you would like to become a member of the group please contact 01305 770081
